In scooters, the engagement of the drive is achieved through contact between the centrifugal clutch pads and the clutch bell. If stiffer springs are installed, the engine must reach a higher rpm to engage (the scooter starts from a higher rpm), and vice versa if softer springs are used. The clutch is optimally adjusted when the scooter engages at approximately the rpm at which the engine reaches its peak torque and power. Springs that are too soft lead to a "balky" start, while springs that are too stiff do not allow the full power and torque to be utilized while riding.
