In scooters, the engagement of the drive is achieved through contact between the centrifugal clutch shoes and the clutch bell. If harder springs are installed, the engine must reach a higher rpm to engage (the scooter starts from a higher rpm), and conversely, if softer springs are used. The clutch is best adjusted when the scooter engages at approximately the rpm where the engine reaches its maximum torque and power. Springs that are too soft lead to a "lugging" effect when starting, while springs that are too hard do not allow the full power and torque to be utilized while riding.
